What We Do

DIABETES EDUCATION & FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM

Safe Haven SD supports local organizations to provide diabetes education for children and their families, focusing on daily disease management, insulin use, blood glucose monitoring, nutrition, and recognizing emergencies. Education is delivered through printed materials, one-on-one guidance, and community events. Emotional support and peer connections are integrated to reduce isolation and stress for both children and caregivers.

Impact:

  • Improved diabetes self-management
  • Reduced emergency complications
  • Increased confidence and independence for children and families

ESSENTIAL DIABETES SUPPLIES PROGRAM

Safe Haven SD funds essential supplies such as glucose meters, test strips, insulin storage materials, and laboratory monitoring devices to support children in need. The program prioritizes underserved families facing financial and geographic barriers to care. Partnerships with healthcare providers and donors help ensure supplies are safe, appropriate, and consistently available.

Impact:

  • Fewer missed insulin doses and glucose checks
  • Reduced health risks caused by supply shortages
  • Improved continuity of care

HOW WE DO IT

Safe Haven SD partners with a trusted local community nonprofit clinic to deliver education, essential supplies, and ongoing support to children living with Type 1 diabetes and their families.  Rather than duplicating services, we work alongside community organizations that already have strong relationships with families, healthcare providers, schools, and local leaders. Through this partnership, Safe Haven SD strengthens existing support systems while expanding the reach and effectiveness of diabetes care. This collaborative approach ensures programs are culturally appropriate, locally accessible, and responsive to real community needs.
